POP ART AT HOTEL PIPPA

Solo Exhibition | Nantucket, Massachusetts | Summer 2022

Hotels are wonderfully theatrical establishments. Guests make entrances, rooms keep secrets, and everyone eventually departs, although not always when expected.

In the summer of 2022, I presented a solo exhibition of my pop paintings at Hotel Pippa, a chic boutique hotel on Nantucket.

Set among the hotel’s contemporary interiors, the works brought familiar faces from cinema and popular culture into rather different surroundings.

It seemed an entirely appropriate setting. After all, my portraits have always been concerned with performers whose personalities and public images have acquired lives quite independent of their owners.

And here they were, keeping company with hotel guests, none of whom, presumably, had expected to share their accommodations with Marilyn Monroe.

I have always believed that a painting should be capable of holding its own in a room.

Even when the room is booked for the night.
